Club Project Nepal

Community Action Nepal

Ian,

Good news from our friends Community Action Nepal  (CAN) below.  Four years ago Glenwalk donated a sum of money to two charitable causes

1. Relief for the Pakistan Earthquake disaster, and
2. To help build a hostel for deaf children in rural Nepal.

As you can see below the money we gave to CAN has been realised with the opening of this hostel that will allow children in remote villages attend school, get an education and give them a chance to sustain themselves, their communities and families in the years ahead.  It is an excellent achievement, and money well spent.   As many of us know Nepal is one of the poorest countries on earth.  Politically it is unstable, the people have endured a bitter ten-year civil war, and there is little in the way of social infrastructure - health, education, adequate housing and employment - particularly in rural areas.  CAN is British-based organisation set up by mountaineers Doug Scott, Chris Bonington et al  to help improve the lives of the Nepalese in these regions: building schools, medical centres, setting up food production projects, clean water projects and other sustainable businesses, critically to help these people help themselves, long-term. (More information can be found at their website:  www.canepal.org.uk)
The deaf children's hostel is a worthwhile project and will make a big difference to these people's lives.  It is great to see our money going directly to a cause and seeing the tangible benefits.  So like Ruth, can I also say, well done Glenwalk.

Dear Gerry,

It is a long time since we have been in contact but I thought you would be interested to know that the hostel at Bahrabise to which Glenwalk kindly contributed funds in 2006 has almost reached completion.  If you could confirm that this is the correct address I will forward photographs of the building.  I will also copy in Hugon Simm so hopefully at least one of you will get this Email.
Due to the fluctuations in the exchange rate and revised plans we have, to date, only a single storey construction but this has been built so that a second floor can be constructed when finances are available.  Last week we heard that Bhoj Raj the chairman of the school committee has successfully applied to the Nepalese Government for a grant to enable the building of a second floor to go ahead when weather conditions permit.  It has also been suggested that a strong retaining wall is constructed around the whole building.  The money, although promised has not been paid to CAN in Kathmandu yet, but as soon as it has the building will be enlarged.  Currently it will house 65 children and the additional floor will increase the capacity to 100.  We have also received funding from Mrs Sara Crichton's family, in memory of her daughter Debbie and her late husband, from their church and from two other UK trusts.  It has been a long process but we are nearly there!

Once again very many thanks to Glenwalk and yourself for helping to get this much needed project started.

Yours sincerely
Ruth Moore
